The Iloilo Museum of Contemporary Art (ILOMOCA) is honored to be the sole regional museum selected to host the Japan Foundation, Manila’s prestigious traveling exhibition, “YAKISHIME – Earth Metamorphosis.” From August 17 to September 4, 2024, Ilonggos will have the unique opportunity to immerse themselves in the captivating world of Yakishime ceramics.
This extraordinary exhibition delves into the artistry and rich history of traditional Japanese ceramics. Yakishime, a distinctive ceramic technique, involves firing unglazed clay at exceptionally high temperatures, resulting in pieces renowned for their natural beauty and earthy aesthetic.
Visitors will embark on a journey through time, exploring the evolution of Yakishime from its humble beginnings as utilitarian earthenware in the pre-feudal Heian period (794-1185) to its refined form as tea wares during the Momoyama period (1574-1600). Additionally, the exhibition showcases contemporary interpretations by renowned ceramicists, highlighting the enduring appeal and versatility of this art form.
“We are thrilled to bring these cultural treasures to Iloilo City,” says Ben Suzuki, Director of The Japan Foundation, Manila. “This exhibition not only offers a glimpse into Japanese aesthetics but also fosters a deeper appreciation for traditional crafts. We hope that by experiencing Yakishime, visitors will discover a new side of Japan that they can truly appreciate.”
Adding to the significance of the event, The Japan Foundation, Manila has generously pledged to donate acrylic glass to ILOMOCA during the opening night. This valuable contribution will further enhance the museum’s ability to showcase artworks and provide a more immersive experience for visitors.
Free admission is offered throughout the exhibition, encouraging Ilonggos of all ages to discover the enchanting world of Yakishime ceramics. The exhibition provides a rare opportunity to experience the beauty and simplicity of this traditional Japanese craft, and it is a testament to the growing cultural exchange between Japan and the Philippines.
Beyond the exhibition, visitors can also explore other exhibits at ILOMOCA, which showcases a diverse range of contemporary Filipino art. The museum’s commitment to promoting local creativity and fostering cultural exchange is evident in its programming and collections.
