Iloilo City Mayor Jerry P. Treñas will be reading a story to children during the World Read Aloud Day (WRAD) at Brgy. Railway Gym in La Paz on February 5.
The event will be recorded as live and will be streamed globally along with other WRAD participants.
“It saddened me that among 79 countries that was assessed last year, Philippines ranked as the lowest in reading comprehension,” said Treñas.
“That is why tomorrow, I will be reading a story to children for the celebration of the World Read Aloud Day (WRAD) in Brgy. Railway, La Paz that will be aired globally to raise awareness and to set as an example to all our beloved Ilonggos in giving importance to reading as a major source of knowledge.”
City Librarian Marion V. Aguirre said the city’s chief executive will read to 40 daycare children, aged three to four years old.
She also encouraged parents, librarians, and educators to help in bringing back love of reading to kids.
This, she urges especially now that the Philippines scored the lowest in reading comprehension among 79 participating countries according to an international assessment result released in December 2019.
WRAD is an annual event calling global attention to the importance of reading, sharing stories, and the idea of literacy as a human right by bringing communities together across the globe to read aloud and change the world. (Beatriz Angelica Pequierda/Iloilo City PIO)
