To help users protect themselves from cyber threats, the Philippine National Police Anti-Cybercrime Group (PNP ACG) and leading mobile wallet GCash emphasize the importance of adopting secure password practices and utilizing additional security features like two-factor authentication.
GCash reminds its users through its educational campaigns that predictable passwords may leave their accounts vulnerable to cybercriminals.
“GCash protects accounts with cutting-edge cybersecurity systems that safeguards our users against cybercriminals. We also ensure the public that our security protocols remain several steps ahead of evolving threats. At the same time, we rely on the cooperation of our users to do their part by creating stronger passwords, which is their first line of defense,” explains Pebbles Sy, Chief Technology and Operating Officer of GCash.
PNP-ACG spokesperson Michelle Sabino has three tips on how users can create better and more secure passwords.
Tip #1. To bolster online security, it is crucial to refrain from using common personal information like nicknames, birthdays, or consecutive numbers as passwords since doing so significantly heightens the risk of unauthorized access.
Tip #2. Understanding the significance of One-Time Passwords (OTPs), which provide an additional layer of security, is vital. Never share OTPs to anyone. Enabling two-factor authentication adds an extra safeguard for your accounts.
Tip #3. It is imperative to never disclose sensitive personal information, including passwords, birthdays, and bank details, to prevent cybercriminals from exploiting it for fraudulent activities and identity theft.
“The public can reach out to the PNP-ACG through its hotlines at (02) 8414-1560 or 0998-598-8116 or via email at acg@pnp.gov.ph. We encourage everyone to report incidents of scams, fraud, and cybercrime,” Sabino noted.
Users can also visit the official GCash Help Center at help.gcash.com or message Gigi on the website and type “I want to report a scam.” Customers can also reach out to the official GCash hotline at 2882 for inquiries and other concerns.
