SM Foundation has been steadfast in its mission to improve the quality of life for Filipinos by providing access to quality healthcare. The foundation took a significant step in this mission by turning over the newly upgraded pediatric ward at the West Visayas State University Medical Center (WVSUMC) in Iloilo City.
WVSUMC, established in 1940s, has a long history of serving the healthcare needs of the Ilonggos. Initially a small hospital, it has grown into a major medical center providing a wide range of services. WVSUMC serves as a critical healthcare provider in the region, with about 56% of its pediatric ward patients coming from Iloilo City’s underserved communities. The hospital also caters to patients from neighboring cities and municipalities, including Antique, Aklan, Capiz, Guimaras, Palawan, and Negros Occidental. The pediatric ward is equipped to handle various procedures such as IV insertion, chemotherapy, and lumbar puncture, and treats illnesses like pneumonia, gastroenteritis, malnutrition, epilepsy, brain tumors, cancer, and chronic diseases.
To further enhance WVSUMC’s capacity, SM Foundation refurbished the ward’s step-down NICU, a pediatric ward for non-infectious cases, and the treatment room. The foundation also upgraded the hallway, toilet, and hand washing area to ensure a safe and conducive environment for holistic healing. Additionally, the ward was equipped with specialized medical appliances and devices, including pediatric cribs, bassinets, treatment beds, nebulizers, gun thermometers, and a mini refrigerator for vaccines. Other amenities provided included breastfeeding chairs, divan chairs, office tables and chairs, bedding, pillows, a TV, water dispenser, and ceiling fans.
No less than First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos graced the event joined by Dr. Dave Endel Gelito III, SM Supermalls President. Steven Tan, , Iloilo City Mayor Jerry Treñas, SM Foundation Executive Director for Health and Wellness Connie Angeles, and WVSU President Dr. Joselito Villaruz.
SM Foundation’s commitment extends beyond healthcare. Through its Health and Medical Programs, SM Foundation has upgraded more than 170 health and wellness centers and served over 1 million patients during its medical missions. Moreover, SM’s commitment to preserving important cultural properties in Iloilo is equally noteworthy. The company has restored properties of cultural significance to the Ilonggos, such as the Molo Mansion, which has now become a popular tourist destination.
In a Public-Private Partnership. the Iloilo City Government and SM is involved in the restoration of the city’s two biggest markets—the Iloilo Central Market and Iloilo Terminal Market. These efforts are eagerly anticipated by the Ilonggo community, who look forward to cleaner, safer, and world-class public markets.
Through these initiatives, SM continues to demonstrate its dedication to enhancing the quality of life in Iloilo, both through healthcare improvements and cultural preservation.
