In the heart of Iloilo City’s Jaro district stands a magnificent structure that has withstood the test of time and witnessed the transformation of the community around it—the iconic Jaro Belfry. Serving as a timeless symbol of tradition, faith, and the resilience of the Ilonggos, the Jaro Belfry has been meticulously restored and now highlights the vibrancy of Jaro Plaza.
The rehabilitation of the belfry, along with Jaro Plaza (formally known as Graciano Lopez Jaena Park), was made possible following the passage of the Heritage Law (Republic Act 10555), which aimed to improve heritage areas in the city. This legislation was authored by then-Congressman and now Mayor Jerry Treñas.
The Jaro belfry, initially constructed by the Augustinian friars in 1744 as a bell and watchtower, has seen multiple renovations due to damages caused by earthquakes in 1787 and 1868. Unfortunately, the second and third stories of the belfry were once more devastated by the powerful earthquake known as “Lady Caycay” on January 25, 1948.
With strong support from Sen. Franklin Drilon, the National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP) funded the recent restoration of the belfry.
Esteemed Ilonggo architect Roderick Tiamson praised the restoration initiative for the Jaro Belfry and other similar efforts in the city. He noted that, together with the charming plaza, these sites encapsulate the history and beauty of the locality.
Tiamson also emphasized the importance of routine management and maintenance to preserve the structure and integrity of the belfry.
“Present preservation efforts and initiatives of the Iloilo City Government have a transformative impact on the city, revitalizing historic spaces, fostering community engagement, and promoting tourism and economic growth,” he said.
He opined that Jaro Plaza has now transformed into a welcoming public space with renewed charm, making it a popular destination for locals and tourists.
Furthermore, Tiamson acknowledged the significant impact of the public-private partnership (PPP) scheme on the city’s progress.
“These partnerships have transformed the city’s infrastructure, boosted the economy, enhanced its livability, and positioned it as a model for sustainable urban development. The city’s success in leveraging PPP demonstrates the potential of this collaborative approach to drive progress and create a better future for its residents,” he added.
For example, the city government’s partnership with SM Prime Holdings, Inc. for the redevelopment of the Iloilo Terminal Market and Iloilo Central Market was driven by the company’s expertise, commitment to local development, sustainable practices, financial strength, and positive reputation.
“This partnership is expected to yield significant benefits for the city, its residents, and the local economy,” he concluded.
The redevelopment of the city’s two largest markets brings numerous benefits to the Ilonggos, impacting their daily lives, livelihood, and overall well-being.
