There will be no Paraw Regatta Festival this February 2020 amid novel Coronavirus scare.
In a press conference on Thursday, Mayor Jerry Treñas announced the postponement of Iloilo’s sailing event amid concerns on the spread of the 2019-nCoV acute respiratory disease.
“We don’t have a choice but postpone our Paraw Regatta this February. For the whole month, we will not hold any big events,” Treñas said.
“This is because we took note of what Deped said in their recent advisory that for the whole month of February, there will be no large gathering of children,” Treñas added.
Treñas made the decision after his consultation with Department of Health (DOH), city’s 2019-nCov ARD focal person Dr. Roland Fortuna, and Iloilo Festivals Foundation Incorporated (IFFI) head Atty. Joebert Peñaflorida.
“We are after the safety and welfare of our citizens, and children, especially those who are more prone to be infected with coronavirus,” Treñas said. “This is just a precautionary measure, especially that we have persons under investigation in the city.”
The city’s top executive is looking at holding the festival sometime in March.
