Iloilo City is now open to private water concessionaires.
Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog issued the statement following his announcement that he will refrain from meddling into the issues of Metro Iloilo Water District (MIWD) which until now has failed to deliver its promised bulk water supply to its clients.
He said there was already a Supreme Court decision that allowed private concessionaires to operate in Cebu.
MIWD is the sole franchise holder to operate water generation and distribution in the city and several neighboring municipalities.
Mabilog said that only 20 percent of the city’s population has been provided water connections by the MIWD.
The mayor added that the city government will allow private concessionaires to install their own lines and even look for their own water source should they decide to invest in this city.
A task force that will look into the initiative will be created to be composed of the City Health Office (CHO), General Services Office (GSO) and private sector representatives.(Source: PNA)
