Disaster responders composed of barangay leaders, social workers and volunteer peacekeepers will receive free cellular phones from Smart Communications.
The mobile phone and internet service subsidiary of Philippine Long Distance Telephone (PLDT) Company donated a total of 432 units of Nokia 105 phones to three of Yolanda’s hardest-hit towns in Iloilo, namely Carles, Estancia and Concepcion.
Smart Community Partnership manager Joyce Panaligan will turn over the donations to Governor Arthur Defensor Sr., Provincial Administrator Dr. Raul Banias and Carles Mayor Arnold Betita.
Panaligan said the local government units will be responsible in identifying and distributing the phones to the rightful beneficiaries. The phones will also have a P100 worth of prepaid load consumable within a month.
These phones, according to her, will keep the communication on and hassle-free during the post-rehabilitation works of infrastructure and livelihood ruined by Yolanda.
Aside from these cellular phones, Smart Communications also previously installed satellite phones in the town proper of Sara, Carles and Estancia to allow survivors to contact their loved ones and family for free. (PNA)
