Iloilo City is once again heralded as one of the cleanest urban centers and top tourism destinations in the Southeast Asian region after it was named one of three Philippine winners to receive the ASEAN Clean Tourist City Award for 2020-2022.
ASEAN Clean Tourist City Award is given to cities that have endeavored to beautify their public areas, improved the environment and sanitation, enhanced urban spaces and promoted their man-made and natural attractions.
The awards is based on ASEAN Clean Tourist City Standard (ACTCS) which aims to provide ASEAN members with a tool that will improve their tourism quality, increase marketing competitiveness but also improve the situation of residents and livelihood by alleviating poverty.
ACTCS assessed the cities based on seven indicators: 1. Environmental management, 2. Cleanliness, 3. Waste Management, 4. Awareness-Building about Environmental Protection and Cleanliness, 5. Green Spaces, 6. Health Safety, Urban Safety, and Security; and 7. Tourism Infrastructure and Facilities.
Iloilo City Mayor Jerry P. Treñas shared his excitement in representing the metropolis in the awarding ceremony, which will happen on January 16, 2020 at The Empire Hotel & Country Club, Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei Darussalam.
“We are very proud that Iloilo City was recognized as one of the three Philippine winners of ASEAN Clean Tourism City Award,” Treñas posted in Facebook.
“All we ever wish is to have a clean city for our Ilonggos to be healthier and our tourists to feel safe,” he added.
The ASEAN Clean Tourist City Award winners shall receive the certificate of appreciation and a plaque with the Asean Clean Tourist City Label. The award is valid for three years, from 2020 to 2022.
