In an effort to scale up the use of renewables, Iloilo City Government, led by Mayor Jerry P. Treñas, entered into a tripartite agreement with MORE Electric and Power Corp. and Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) during a ceremony at City Hall Aug. 3.
Under the agreement, the parties collaborate in promoting the use of renewable energy (RE), relative to the implementation of Net-Metering Program and Distributed Energy Resources (DER), making it accessible for consumers in the metro.
“With this collaboration, we take a significant step in promoting green practices using renewable energy resulting to reduced electricity bills and a sustainable way of living, thus bringing a positive impact on the environment,” Treñas stressed.
The mayor noted that City Hall, Iloilo City Action and Response (ICARE) Centers, Iloilo City National High School, Dialysis Centers, Esplanades, and waiting sheds at Diversion Road are already utilizing solar panels.
These programs aim to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, generate economic development, and manage electricity costs.
The partners agreed to maximize RE technologies in the locality, empower consumers, and push for cost-efficient demand management.
Net-metering allows consumers to sell their excess power to the distribution grid.
DER refers to smaller power sources that could be aggregated to provide the power necessary to meet regular demand.
“Our collaboration with Iloilo City has been active for the past three years, and we warmly welcome the involvement of ERC. Being the first in the Visayas and outside Luzon to enter into this agreement showcases our strong support for the government,” MORE Power President and CEO Roel Z. Castro said.
As of June 30, 72 qualified end-users with a combined capacity of 985.37 kilowatt-peak have received Certificates of Compliance from ERC.
They implement massive information, education, and communication campaign for more consumers to avail of the same.
ERC provides the technical and regulatory expertise necessary to ensure the proper implementation and execution.
