Mayor Jose S. Espinosa III said the City Government is eyeing the construction of a 7,000-seater stadium to hold big sports events in the metropolis.
The plan, if realized, will help boost Iloilo City as sports tourism destination.
Espinosa made the announcement before delegates of Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) All-Star Game in the city Sunday.
“We are now contemplating to build a new coliseum and I already instructed the City Engineer that the facility can cater 7,000 seats so that there will be more PBA games and other events in the city,” Espinosa said.
“We have already identified the place and our plans are now being processed. This will attract more games to the city. This is our commitment because sports development is one major aspect of our governance,” he added.
Espinosa stressed that being in sports is also a way to help make a drug-free community.
“If we can have sports program for our people, especially the young, this will complement our anti-drug campaign. Be in sports, not on drugs,” he said. (Roger Paul Timothy L. Lacuarta/Iloilo City PIO)
