Agriculture Secretary Proceso J. Alcala will be on a trip to Middle East this week to promote Iloilo’s long-grain aromatic rice.
Alcala said the product is of export quality and will be a part of the variety to be promoted in Middle East as preparations for the plan to export rice next year.
The secretary, during his series of engagements in Iloilo last week, was presented three kilos of aromatic rice that were processed at the modern rice processing complex in Pototan.
DA Regional Executive Director Larry Nacionales said that currently, around 20 hectares of rice land in the province, mostly situated in upland areas, are being planted with aromatic rice.
Selected municipalities in Panay Island have also been identified as pilot area for the upland rice farming that made use of aromatic rice varieties.
The long grain aromatic rice is now being sold at P150/kilo in major malls in Iloilo.
