In a move to make the coastlines clean, Iloilo City Mayor Jose Espinosa III said the City Government will initiate a clean-up drive.
Espinosa has instructed the City Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) to make a module on how to start the clean-up phase by phase starting in heavily-populated coasts of barangays Calumpang and San Juan in Molo district, and mouth of Batiano River.
“What they have been doing in Boracay and now in Manila Bay has created positive results, that is why we will spearhead a coastal clean-up here in our city to make the shores swimmable, clean, and safe,” Espinosa said.
The initiative is an offshoot of President Rodrigo Duterte’s order for Boracay’s rehabilitation last year and clean-up of Manila Bay this year.
Espinosa noted one of the reasons for the clean-up was due to high coliform level.
“We will be tapping the City Health and non-government organizations on how to clean the coastal areas and since it is residential, we will take a look into putting up communal comfort rooms and septic tanks,” he said.
Espinosa said he will take a look at establishments that dumped their wastes along the coastlines. (Merianne Grace Ereñeta/Iloilo City PIO)
