The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) has opened its government internship program (GIP) to at least 927 graduates from Western Visayas who want to join the government.
“We are giving opportunity for those graduates that are looking for work and anticipating to work in the government,” DOLE Assistant Regional Director Salome Siaton said Wednesday.
Siaton said that upon hiring, the interns would be paid 75 percent of the minimum wage, and are expected to render a minimum of three months and six months on the maximum.
DOLE initially targets to accommodate 142 trainees from Aklan, but with the looming closure of the famous island of Boracay, an additional 50 slots were made available to assist the agency in the profiling of workers affected by the closure.
So far, Antique has 17 slots; Capiz, 70; Iloilo, 297; and Negros Occidental with 171 available slots.

Siaton said those who are interested may apply with DOLE.
Applicants have to be fresh graduates or have not been employed for a longer period of time, and should have interest to serve in the government.
GIP is a component of the KABATAAN 2000 created under Executive Order no. 139 series of 1993 and DOLE Administrative Order no. 260-15.
It aims to engage the youth to serve the public through various government offices, programs and projects both at the national and local levels.
Siaton said that aside from DOLE, they are also deployed to partner agencies such as local government units. (By Perla Lena, PNA)
