Department of Education (DepEd) announced that while the formal school opening will be on August, the enrollment period will start this June 2020.
In a Department Order No. 007 series of 2020 which also included the school calendar and activities for academic year 2020-2021, DepEd posted that the Enrollment will be from June 1-30, 2020.
“Schools shall conduct enrollment from June 1–30, 2020 for all learners intending to attend SY 2020-2021, including those who enrolled during the early registration period in February 2020, given that circumstances have changed substantially,” DepEd Secretary Leonor Briones said.
DepEd is also looking into the possibility of waiving of documentary requirements upon enrollment as some learners and parents have issues complying with it during this Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic.
Based on the DepEd Basic Education Enrollment Policy, learners need to present minimum documentary requirements such as birth certificate issued by the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA), among others. For transferees, they need to submit the PSA-issued birth certificate, latest report card or permanent transfer of records from originating school—among others.
On private schools, Briones said that they may open their classes earlier as long as long the schedule is within the period allowed by the law. As stated in Republic Act 7797, “the school year shall start on the first Monday of June but not later than the last day of August.”
“School opening will not necessarily mean traditional face-to-face learning in the classroom,” Briones said. “No face-to-face classes will be allowed earlier than August 24, 2020.”
