Around 800 families are expected to benefit from the two Gawad Kalinga (GK) villages that will soon be established in the municipality of Lambunao, Iloilo.
This was confirmed by Mayor Jason Gonzales who expressed their town’s excitement over the rise of possibly one of the biggest GK villages in the province.
The first village will be constructed in a 12.6-hectare lot of Barangay Tampucao. The site has a good view because it is overlooking the Ulian River, he said.
The construction of houses will be financed by Pro-Friends, a property developer with projects in Iloilo. The village will not simply showcase the row of houses but will also serve as a site for agri-enterprises.
“We are exploring the possibility with Gawad Kalinga to establish the first authentic eco-village in the country,” Gonzales said. This means that the project ensures sustainable living, he said.
“That is a real possibility and we are promoting later on the village as an eco-tourism destination,” he added.

He disclosed that part of the 500 houses will be utilized as hostel to operate a bed and breakfast. The town will assist in the operation and funding but the income will later on be plowed back to the village.
The new concept, he said, will showcase to their visitor how a farm works.
Another village will be established in Barangay Maribong with around 200 to 300 houses.
These two villages will accommodate informal settlers, survivors of typhoon Yolanda and other homeless residents of surrounding barangays. [via PNA]
