Almost 120 aftershocks have been recorded by the Office of Civil Defense Region 6 (OCD-6) in the city and province of Iloilo following the 7.2 magnitude earthquake that hit the Visayas Tuesday morning.
OCD-6 public information officer Anne Calderon said they are continuously monitoring the aftershocks and the possible damage these can bring to buildings in the city.
The OCD-6 reported that a house in Barangay Rizal, Jordan, Guimaras was destroyed, but no one was injured. A concrete house located at the Iloilo waterfront area was also damaged.
Meanwhile, Iloilo Governor Arthur Defensor Sr. said he is thankful that there was no reported major damage in the province, but he reminded his constituents to be on alert for expected aftershocks.
It was earlier reported that several government and private buildings in Iloilo City such as the Metro Iloilo Water District, the Iloilo Provincial Capitol and the nearby Iloilo Days Hotel sustained minor cracks on the walls.
The strong tremor plunged the city and province of Iloilo into darkness, causing panic among some residents.
Power supply in the city was restored after several hours but the Panay Electric Company had to implement rotational brownouts due to power shortage of Panay Power Corporation.
Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog also suspended classes in the city to pave the way for an inspection of school buildings by personnel of the City Engineer’s Office. (Source: PNA)
